AutoPortal.com is Test driving the Renault Kwid

Reports say that Renault Kwid demand has surpassed all expectation of Renault India. But how is it test driving the Renault Kwid? Let us find out.

First impression

The first impression when you get inside the Kwid is that you don’t feel this is an entry-level compact car. It feels like a much bigger car. With dimensions like length of 3679 mm, width of 1579 mm, height of 1478 mm, wheelbase of 2422 mm, ground clearance of 180 mm and a kerb weight of 635 kg, the Kwid looks more like a hatchback-turned-crossover. Sharp creases on the hood give it a muscular look. The cladding along the sides and around the back gives it an SUV-ish look.

Inside

Inside, the digital instrumental cluster is simple and straightforward. Instead of a tachometer, it has a gear shift indicator. The cabin (top-end variant) has a 7-inch touchscreen, which sits in the centre console. The infotainment system has been borrowed from the Duster, and offers Bluetooth connectivity and navigation (segment first). The front seats are comfortable with ample leg space at the rear. Under-thigh support is on the lower side. The boot is 300 litres and is the biggest amongst all small cars. There are plenty of cubbyholes – two glove boxes, big door pockets and enough space in the centre console. Also check about Renault KWID Price in India , specification, Images, Reviews

Segment first features

The Renault Kwid has got features that no other car in the segment offers. It gets a multimedia system with satnav, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, front power windows, on-board trip computer, and a gear shift indicator.

Under the hood

Under the hood, the Renault Kwid houses a brand new 800cc, three-cylinder engine. It has four valves per cylinder and is devoid of the vibration associated with three-cylinder motors. It generates a power of 53 bhp and 72N m of torque. But is it inadequate? You feel the less power on an inclination. However, it is very impressive in the ride-and-handling department, while offering good high-speed stability. Renault claims a fuel efficiency of 25.17 kmpl. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Safety

Renault could have done better in the safety department. Kwid will not get a passenger side airbag though a driver airbag is offered as an option. ABS is also lacking.

Value for money

The Kwid looks like a big car – almost like an SUV. It also has the features and a new engine and platform. The top variant costs Rs 3.53 lakh, while the base variant is Rs 2.57 lakh.

Tail piece

We feel that the Renault Kwid is the best in its segment. With its high ground clearance, responsive engine and spacious cabin it make it an excellent entry level car.
